John H. Whitney's work for Glenn Curtiss

John Heimerdinger Whitney was born September 30, 1880 in Chicago, Illinois, to Arthur Eustice Whitney and Katherine (Heimerdinger) Whitney.

In 1884, the family moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota, where Arthur managed and later owned a store for the Kimball Piano Company. John briefly attended the University of Minnesota then moved with his parents to San Francisco just before the great earthquake and fire of 1908. After the move, John enrolled in the University of California, in Berkeley, to continue his mining engineering education. The remainder of the text in this section is a compilation of several of John H. Whitney's own writings. He wrote most of them ca. 1935.
