The North Island era: Birth of naval aviation

North Island, ca. 1911

This is a picture of North Island, showing the only building, an old tobacco barn. The caption on the back of the original print identifies the men as Lt. Theodore G. Ellyson, U.S. Navy and C.C. Witmer. Both were student pilots learning flying from Glenn Curtiss in 1911.
