Retractable wing floats

Prototype hydroplane with wing floats retracted The photos on this page show a prototype hydroplane with retractable wingtip floats in the retracted position. This view shows the wingtip floats in retracted (flight) position. They would be lowered for take-off and raised after take-off to reduce aerodynamic drag. This was one of the stages of Curtiss' development of a plane for the U.S. Navy.
