About the Glenn Curtiss Historical Society

Curtiss photographer and personal secretary John H. Whitney

Curtiss photographer and personal secretary John H. Whitney poses in one of the planes Curtiss used to train pilots on North Island in 1911.

While aviation pioneer Glenn H. Curtiss was inventing the aircraft that would be the start of naval aviation, John H. Whitney took pictures. Whitney worked as Curtiss' personal secretary and company photographer.

Read about Whitney's relationship with Curtiss, from Whitney's own memoirs.

Whitney's son, John A. Whitney, inherited his father's collection of photographs and stories he had written about his time with Curtiss. The Glenn Curtiss Historical Society is, at the time of this writing, made up of John A. Whitney; John A. Whitney's children, Marilyn V. Whitney, M.D., and Ronald J.C. Whitney; and Whitney family friend Jay M. Farlow. They formed their organization expressly to create this web site and thereby make available to you John H. Whitney's images and information.

John A. Whitney, himself a private pilot and owner of a Cessna "Cardinal" aircraft, has done the work of compiling and organizing his father's collection. John A. Whitney has also written much of the material on this web site, based on information from his father and other sources. He also handles the scanning of his father's photographs.

Ronald J.C. Whitney handles the technical end of creating this web site. He also helps with the proofreading of the web pages and contributes ideas for their content.

Jay M. Farlow edits John A. Whitney's material, lays out web pages and sets up site navigation. He is also a private pilot.

Marilyn V. Whitney, M.D., assists with web page proofreading. She is also a private pilot.
